Peach picking near Sydney is mostly a Bilpin story, with a handful of orchards in the Hawkesbury foothills about 90 minutes north-west of the city, plus a couple of options down towards Darkes Forest and Thirlmere in the Southern Highlands direction. The season typically runs from November through February, peaking around December and January, which lines up neatly with the summer school holidays. Prices are refreshingly straightforward at most of these farms: Cedar Creek Orchard in Thirlmere charges from $4.50 a kilo for what you pick, and several Bilpin growers simply weigh your basket at the gate rather than charging a separate entry fee. A few, like Pine Crest Orchard, don't charge for entry at all. Expect gravel car parks and working orchards rather than polished tourist set-ups, so sturdy shoes help.

Bilpin, in the Hawkesbury foothills about 90 minutes north-west of the city, is the main hub, with orchards including Pine Crest Orchard, Bilpin Springs Orchard and 4 Winds Farm all growing peaches. South of Sydney, Cedar Creek Orchard at Thirlmere and Glenbernie Orchard at Darkes Forest offer a similar drive in the opposite direction.
Bilpin is about a 90-minute drive north-west of the Sydney CBD along the Bells Line of Road. The Southern Highlands and Illawarra option, around Darkes Forest and Thirlmere, is a similar drive time heading south, so either direction makes for a comfortable half-day or full-day trip without an overnight stay.
Sydney-area peaches are typically ready from November through February, with December and January the peak weeks for most Bilpin and Southern Highlands orchards. Exact timing shifts with the weather each year, so it's worth a quick call to the farm the week before you plan to drive out.
Most of these are walk-up, pay-for-what-you-pick orchards rather than ticketed experiences, so booking generally isn't required. That said, Bilpin gets busy on weekends during school holidays, and smaller farms sometimes close for a private event, so a quick phone call before you leave home is still a good habit.
