Blueberry picking in Australia runs on two very different clocks depending on where you are. In south-east Queensland, blueberries are an unusual winter crop, typically ready from July to September and peaking in August — in season right now. Western Australia's South West (Manjimup and Pemberton) and the NSW Central Coast pick up early, from around October to December, while further along the NSW coast the South Coast season runs December into late January. The bulk of pick-your-own blueberry farms are in the cooler southern states — Victoria's Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula and Tasmania — where the season sits broadly across summer, roughly December to March or April, peaking in January. Picking is straightforward: you're handed a bucket or punnet and pick straight from low bushes, paying either an entry fee plus weight, or a flat per-kilogram rate. Expect somewhere around $10 to $25 a kilogram, or family entry fees from about $20 to $50 at busier farms.

Ripe blueberries are fully deep blue-purple with a light silvery bloom, and should come away from the stem with a gentle roll rather than a tug — if it resists, leave it another day or two. Reddish or greenish berries won't sweeten once picked, so check the colour, not just the size. Pick into a shallow container so berries at the bottom don't get crushed. At home, don't wash blueberries until you're ready to eat them, and keep them in the fridge, where they'll usually keep for one to two weeks. They also freeze well straight from fresh.

It varies a lot by region. South-east Queensland has an unusual winter blueberry season, roughly July to September, peaking in August. Western Australia's South West and the NSW Central Coast pick from around October to December. The main southern season — Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania — runs roughly December to March or April, peaking in January. Always check the specific farm's current picking status before you drive out.
Pricing varies by farm. Many charge by weight, typically $10 to $25 a kilogram, while some charge a punnet price of around $12. Others charge an entry fee, from about $5 per person up to $20-25 for adults at busier farms, sometimes including a set weight of fruit. A few properties don't publish pricing online, so it's worth calling ahead to confirm current rates.
Yes. The Hawkesbury district around Bilpin has a couple of pick-your-own blueberry farms, roughly an hour from the Sydney CBD, alongside options further out on the Central Coast and NSW South Coast. Seasons and opening days vary between properties and by year, so it's worth checking a farm's current picking status before you make the drive.
Yes, most easily in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley, which have several pick-your-own blueberry farms roughly 45 minutes to an hour from the Melbourne CBD. The Mornington Peninsula and Geelong/Bellarine district also have blueberry patches. Most run through summer, roughly December to March, though exact opening months differ between farms, so confirm before visiting.
Yes, in one specific place: south-east Queensland's blueberry season runs through winter, typically July to September, peaking in August, so it's genuinely in season right now. Elsewhere in the country, blueberry season doesn't start until spring at the earliest, with most southern farms not opening until around October or later. Check the farm directly before you drive out.
